It’s probably the most common sentence I hear as a photographer: “I’m not very good/don’t look very good/feel comfortable in front of cameras”. The truth is: no one is ever completely comfortable when their photo is being taken. Below are a few tips that you can apply to help you feel more at ease with your photographer.

  1. Meet and get to know your photographer beforehand

It really goes without saying that if you know someone beyond first name basis, you’re more likely to feel a bit more relaxed when they go to start taking your photos. If you’re booking your wedding photographer, having a meetup or Skype call before your wedding day is a good way to feel more comfortable when it comes to having photos taken at your wedding day. A good photographer should offer this as part of their package.

  1. Have an engagement photography session

I cannot recommend highly enough having some sort of photography session with your wedding photographer before your wedding day. Most wedding photographers include a complementary engagement session in their wedding packages, to ensure their couple feels like they have some idea of what it feels like to have their picture taken.

Bonus: you also end up with some really awesome photos of you and your SO that you can cherish in the future! Wedding planning can be a stressful time, and an engagement session can be a great way to chill with your future husband or wife and remind each other of your love.

  1. Wear things that are you

There’s nothing worse than trying to pretend to do or be something other than yourself. Instagram couples and Pinterest outfit inspiration may seem like the exact style you’re going for; however, you will always feel the best and most confident when you are being you.

When you go to have your photos taken, dress in what will make you feel the most confident. Feel like dressing up? Do it. Feel like being comfy & cosy? Go for it!

  1. Have fun

When it comes to having your photographs taken, you almost have to over-hype yourself. Get excited! The age old saying of “fake it till you make it” applies here. Although it may feel odd, it’s very true.

The more you try to feel excited and confident for your session, the better you’ll feel on the day!

  1. Be Yourselves

My favourite sessions as a photographer are where my couples are completely themselves. Rather than constantly wondering about how you look on the camera, focus instead on relaxing and letting your personalities shine through. Not only will this make your photos super personal, but you’ll be able to look back on them in the future and treasure the moments.
